julie blanc contact@julie-blanc.fr [fr/en] [fr/en] julie blanc est designeuse graphique et étudiante-chercheuse (ensadlab–paris). elle travaille pour l’initiative pagedmedia ⟡ et participe activement à prepostprint ⟡ . ses travaux et ses recherches portent essentiellement sur la conception d’objets éditoriaux multisupport, multimodaux et/ou hybrides et sur le développement de chaînes de publications par une pratique du design. elle utilise pour cela les concepts de la programmation au travers des technologies du web (html5, css3, javascript, epub), autant pour les objets numériques qu’imprimés. julie blanc is a graphic designer and student-researcher at ensadlab-paris. she works on the pagedmedia initiative ⟡ and is an active participant in prepostprint ⟡ . her work and research focuses on the design of multi-media, multimodal and/or hybrid editorial objects and the development of publishing chains through design practice. she uses the concepts of programming through web technologies (html5, css3, javascript, epub) for both digital and printed objects. travaux works ↑ mandarine code x : prepostprint atlas cosmologique des léviathans le cahier de l'erg humanités spatiales résumé du projet de recherche abstract of research project ↑ design and digital writing: multi-media and multimodal editions move editorial design practices towards a use of programming with the multiplication of formats and reading materials, editorial projects can today be conceived for multi-media, multimodal or hybrid production formats (such as pdf, web site, epub, web application, print-on-demand document, and so on.) these formats often combine new visual and temporal media (such as video, sound, data visualization, interactive animation, augmented reality .. amongst other possibilities.). their digital nature provides challenges for the technical production of these editorial objects. current production flows respond to this problem by adopting carefuly defined templates with specific structural (markup content) and graphical requirements, limits, and options. these specifications tend to ignore multimedia content and preclude the possibilities of sensitive design work. at the same time, current design practices have no particular relevance for digital publishing while it could offer new possibilities for the development of the aesthetic quality of multi-media editorial objects and global multimedia workflows. commonly used design tools such as adobe suite and the associated indesign software were developed primarily to handle output for for print production and subsequently retrofitted to cope with digital layouts. the particular limits and mediations these widely used tools place on the production process are largely invisible, but they have to be taken into account and questioned, in particular for multimodal production. the challenge, therefore, is how to to rethink the design and production of multi-media and / or multimodal editions taking full account of their graphic and interactive qualities ? perhaps also, it is time to consider moving designers' practices towards a use of programming for editorial design? my proposed research project is practice-based and will focus on techniques for editorial design and production. the project has several related objectives: the first objective is to interrogate and take advantage of the specificity of the supports and the formats while keeping a logical, structural and aesthetic coherence between each object proceeding from the same editorial project. the fact of working on a common flow that generates both print and digital versions will cross constraints: digital liquidity will have an influence on printed productions, and the concern and typographic control of print will have an influence on digital objects. the study will be concerned with the adaptation of content to its editorial environment and the associated hybridization of reading methods. the second objective is based on the hypothesis of a shift in the practices of designers towards a use of programming for editorial design. the project will explore concepts of computer code such as logical structuring and submission to computation pushes to re-examine aesthetic choices or editorial norms. it will also explore how the confrontation with computer techniques reveals ideas and phenomena which lead to transformation of visual thinking. the third objective is to put design at the heart of production workflows. workflow decisions have a strong influence on the resultant objects. these decisions are related to design options, mixing both cultural and technical expertise. the idea is to shift the focus of the designer's work from the design of editorial objects through software, to the design of systems to produce editorial objects. this implementation of workflows would make it possible to ensure coherence between the content and the form of a multisupport and / or multimodal editorial project from a global design perspective. this approach is logically coupled with a preference for open (and therefore stable and sustainable) systems and objects, developed and shared in a collective mode while relying on modular open source technology bricks, the approach focuses on the use of standard web technologies (html5 / css3 / javascript) and currently emergent concepts and practices (collaborative writing, versioning, semantic structure, responsive and parametric design) with considerable potential to build modular systems to design and publish interactive editorial content, multimedia, multi-modal and multi-format. design et écritures numériques : éditions multisupports et multimodales déplacer les pratiques du design éditorial vers un usage de la programmation avec la multiplication des formats et supports de lectures, les projets éditoriaux peuvent être aujourd’hui pensés pour une diffusion multisupport, multimodale ou hybride en s’appuyant sur un ensemble de production de natures diverses (pdf, site web, epub, livre numérique, application web, document imprimé à la demande, etc.) qui combinent souvent des médias visuels et temporels nouveaux (vidéos, sons, visualisations de données, animations interactives, réalité augmentée…). leur diffusion numérique pose la question du formatage technique de ces objets éditoriaux. les flux de productions actuels répondent à cette problématique en adoptant des templates (gabarits) hyper normés structurellement (par balisage du contenu), mais aussi graphiquement. cette position a tendance à négliger les contenus multimédias et le travail du sensible. dans le même temps, les pratiques de design actuelles ne sont pas adaptées à l’édition numérique et ne permettent pas de répondre à la même problématique alors même qu’elles pourraient être la réponse au développement de la qualité esthétique des objets éditoriaux multisupports et à une réflexion globale sur les contenus multimédias. l’invisibilisation des dispositifs (logiciels) numériques utilisés pour la conception et la production construisent et imposent des gestes en ajoutant leurs propres médiations à l’objet produit, souvent en restant tournés vers le régime de l’imprimé. (on le voit particulièrement avec la suite adobe et son logiciel indesign pour la mise en page imprimée et numérique). dès lors, comment repenser la conception et la production d’éditions multisupports et/ou multimodales en prenant pleinement en compte leurs qualités graphiques et interactives et pourquoi déplacer les pratiques des designers vers un usage de la programmation pour le design éditorial ? ce projet de recherche, en se concentrant sur les techniques pour la conception et la production éditoriale, repose sur une recherche basée sur la pratique visant plusieurs objectifs liés : le premier objectif est d’interroger et tirer parti de la spécificité des supports et des formats tout en gardant une cohérence logique, structurelle et esthétique entre chacun des objets procédant d’un même projet éditorial. le fait de
